Artist Lorraine Roy explores the spiritual qualities of trees, particularly in her burning bush series. About 15 years ago I planted this American beech in a clearing beside our cottage. Receiving limited sunlight it has not grown beyond a sapling, yet its life shines brightly amid a shadowy cloister of Eastern hemlocks. The species’ habit of holding onto its leaves through winter gives it a special ghostly quality. This is my own living burning bush.
